Recently Bob Hund was playing at The Gävle Concert Hall, and not knowing anything about them I thought, hey why not? This band has been around for quite sometime and has a bit of a cult following from what I understand. Being exposed to so many different types of music and bands I never would have heard of it just another perk of working at the Concert Hall. The lead singer is quite the character with a big stage presence. He always wears a mask and gloves, same as in their videos. I'm not sure how to classify their music, but maybe that's part of the fun.
This young pop star has quite the voice and won Sweden's got talent in 2008 at the age of just ten.
The Sami people are the indigenous people from the arctic regions of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and parts of Russia. Jojk means song in sami. I find it to be incredibly expressive and powerful, without the use of words it draws emotion, it strikes a chord.
Jon Henrik's jojk to the left won Sweden's got talent. During the video he describes his life as a Sami living in the north herding reindeer and that his closest friend had passed away. While dealing with his grief the song came to him and he created it in memory of his friends life and the person that he was.
Here are some popular songs sang in Swedish from recent years. All the artists I've posted are Swedish as well, but many choose to sing in English with the hope of become internationally recognized.
There's this big singing competition in Europe called Eurovision. It's basically the American Idol of, uhh the whole of Europe? Anyway, needless to say it has a following. Sweden won the competition in 2015 with representative Måns Zelmerlöw's song Heroes below.
With the song below, Robin Stjernberg won one of Sweden's large music competitions called Melodifestival and went on to compete in Eurovision 2013.
In 2012 Sweden was represented by Loreen and won! Here's the winning song, it's pretty good if you like pop/dance music and her voice isn't too shabby either.
I can't get enough of these two ridiculously talented sisters. If you like the folk music feel, but a bit more modern, First Aid Kit is up your alley. You can tell they have been singing together for a long time and have such unique and complimentary voices as well as interesting lyrics.
Swedish House Mafia consists of a trio of disc jockeys who took the dance, house, trance music world by storm. The group formed sometime around 2008 and recently announced they will be taking a hiatus. I'll be hoping for a reunion sometime in the future!
Robyn has been in the music industry for a long time but made it big worldwide sometime around 2007. She has been nominated for Grammy Awards as well as won several Swedish Grammy Awards. She has a unique quirkiness about her and a general style not many could pull off. I absolutely love Robyn and hope you do too!
So here are a few "oldies" but goodies I just couldn't pass up! (and by that I mean not released within the past few years)
"Music is an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we all are touched by. No matter what culture we're from.''
